How to Identify Sun Damage

Now that we know how the sun damages the skin, let’s explore all the ways sun damage can present itself and who is most susceptible to this kind of damage. If you are just catching up on the conversation, check out our previous blog where we run down the basics of how sun damage affects your skin.

The best way to identify sun damage is to compare skin on your body that is exposed to the sun all the time vs. skin that is largely hidden behind clothes. Notice any difference? If you don’t then that’s great! Either you’re doing a great job staying out of the sun or you’re great about protecting yourself when you are out and about. However, most of us will notice one or some of the following:

  • Wrinkling

  • Sunspots and freckles

  • Decrease skin tone

  • Uneven skin texture and tone

  • Rough skin

  • Broken capillaries

  • Redness and blotchiness

While some of this happens naturally with aging, the difference with sun damage is that the areas that are more exposed to the sun have more exaggerated signs.

Who is most susceptible? That depends on two factors: (1) genetics and (2) habit and lifestyle. In terms of genetics, people with lighter skin tend to burn easier. This tends to correlate with how light your natural skin tone is. In terms of habit and lifestyle, those who are exposed to the sun for longer periods of time and during times when the sun is the harshest sustain more damage. Tanning beds also cause sun damage since they use UV light.

Think you might have some sun damage? No worries – there are plenty of options to reduce the appearance of damage. These options include:

  • Lasers

  • Chemical peels

  • Dermabrasion

  • Microneedling

  • Microblading
