How the Sun Can Damage Your Skin

Living in Florida, it’s hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t have some kind of sun damage to their skin. When you live in sunshine all year long, it’s an inevitable fate. However much we love going to the beach, strolling in the park, or just relaxing on our lanais, most us don’t necessarily appreciate the sunspots and wrinkles that comes with it.

How does the sun create spots and wrinkling? When UV rays from the sun hits unprotected skin, the rays actually damage the DNA in the skin cells. This process is called photoaging (since this process causes premature aging of the skin), photodamage, solar damage, or sun damage. Photo, in this case, means light. This is a process in which the light literally damages your skin cells. If you have ever gotten a sunburn, this is that exact process. In the worse case scenario, this can lead to cancer. However, hopefully we’ve caught it before then and the only damage is cosmetic. However, because this damage penetrates to the deepest part of your skin, the dermis, it takes a long time for your skin to turnover enough skin to minimize the spots and wrinkles. Years even. In that time, your skin continues to suffer damage unless you apply sunscreen correctly. So, what does photoaging and damage looks like and whose most prone to this type of damage? Stay tuned for our next blog!
