Myths About Wrinkles

"Wrinkles will only go where smiles have been"

As much as wrinkles are a genuine display of the years the makes up our lives there are a lot of misconceptions about this beautiful side effect of time. One of the most common myths is the wrinkles can be prevented by moisturizing.

False.

Wrinkles are caused by environmental damages and aging of the skin. While we cannot stop aging, we can prevent further environmental damages, the most important one being the sun. The importance of sunscreen can't be emphasized enough. UV rays from the sun causes genetic and structural damages to the skin which causes wrinkles and, worst case scenario, cancer. Wearing SPF every day and reapplying when needed is crucial in preventing fine lines from forming. Even on a cloudy day, UV rays can penetrate through clouds. That's why it is important to wear it every day despite the weather conditions.

Going off of that, another myth is that wrinkles are genetic. While this is partially true, once again, most wrinkles are the result of sun damage. In a culture that loves tanning, seeing few wrinkles on mom doesn't mean the son or daughter will be blessed with a smooth face as tanning beds and laying out can cause the child to age faster than their parents. Once again, sunscreen is the solution for prevention.
